INTRODUCTION

The College of Liberal Education of Shu-Te University, formerly the ¡§Center of General Education¡¨ established in 1998, was renamed and approved by the Ministry of Education in 2000 as college level unit of the university. The college carries out the missions of curriculum planning and implementation for general (liberal) education courses, as well as related administrative affairs. The college is composed of five divisions under the supervision of the ¡§Commission of General Education¡¨. The functions of the commission include: (1) planning for development directions of general education; (2) examining important proposals and issues related to the general education within the university. The university upholds the motto of promoting ¡§academic study, knowledge acquisition, happiness, and hope¡¨, focusing on versatile, integrated, open, autonomous, and self-disciplined campus characteristics. The college develops along with the university to stress on duties of teaching and research, personality cultivating, establishing autonomous and open learning environment, and constructing an atmosphere with mutual respects.

The college advocates the ideal of ¡§holistic education¡¨ in a hope of cultivating students¡¦ humane thoughts, fundamental communication skills, workplace emotions management ability, and senses of spirituality, in addition to the university¡¦s commitment to training professional talents. Based on this belief, the university regulated that at least one-fourth of students¡¦ course credits to fulfill the minimum graduation requirements must be taken from general education courses. The college categorized the courses as four aspects: core courses in liberal education, skills education, disciplines of liberal education, and courses in the values of liberal education. The concept of ¡§organic systems¡¨ was adopted to design and integrate the liberal education courses in five divisions: Chinese and English Languages, Humanities and Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Science, and All-out Defense Education. It is hoped that graduates from this university become outstanding ¡§holistic persons with professional proficiency¡¨ through this design of general education curriculum. Graduates can apply acquired knowledge onto their career paths, experience the real life, and make contribution to the society.

FEATURES

The philosophy of the liberal education curriculum at Shu-Te is multifaceted. It is aimed to benefit students by coordinating the educational objectives of the university through formal courses, the influence of the campus environment, and the participation in extra-curricular activities. Students are not only expected to acquire professional skills, but also to develop their independent thinking, communication skills and concern for humanity. We believe liberal education plays a critical role in university education.

The liberal education curriculum is emphasized with the function of intangible influences. In addition to guiding students in their pursuit of professional skills, it also serves to cultivate their concern for humanity. Therefore, a series of student activities that involve both creative thinking and practical responsibilities is held every semester to create a compassionate atmosphere and to foster a humane attitude around students. Moreover, activities focusing on concern for the society and community service are held regularly on the initiative of the college, with the assistance of university administrators, faculty and students. Community residents are also invited to take part in cultural and recreational activities to establish a friendly mutual relationship. Students are not only expected to attend all classes, but also to develop an interest in various academic disciplines and to acquire extensive knowledge, humane qualities, the ability to think independently and to develop self-realization through flexible courses provided by the College of Liberal Education. In addition, students are expected to understand and appreciate diverse societies and cultures, to gain new knowledge constantly, and to take up challenges in the future.
